Editorial Review of Chen's Mandarin Szechwan Cuisine

The moment you step into Chen's, you know that you'll get your pick of the litter in terms of food and atmosphere, as Chen's offers several varieties of each.

The first thing you will see out of the corner of your left eye will be Chen's bar and sake lounge. This in and of itself is a good place to drink, as it boasts numerous spirits, as well as some sushi samples that sit on the counter. A little bit further down is the sake lounge itself. The lounge is of an intimate size, and makes a perfect area for relaxing.

The menu caters to both meat-eaters and vegetarians with a staggering range of eats. Choices include vegetable tempura; lemon chicken, crispy duck and other Chinese dishes; plenty of maki and nigiri; and a range of rice and noodle dishes like lo mein and udon.

Once you sit down in the main eating area, you can enjoy the tables for four near the open windows facing Clark Street (perfect for people watching, especially if a Cubs game has just ended). If you are on a more romantic endeavor, there is long booth where there are loads of tables for couples. You and your special lady (or man) friend can then admire Chen's sleek interior design, consisting of sky blues and light blacks.

Most entrees are above $10, and the sushi can be even more expensive, depending on your appetite; most nigiri is $1.95 per piece, and rolls fall in the $3.95-$10.95 range.
