When asked to envision a hookah lounge, most people will immediately conjure up a scene resembling the inside of a genie's bottle—luxurious fabrics billowing from the walls, wall-to-wall oriental carpeting and beautiful, ornately costumed people sitting on tufted golden pillows. The simple decor at Dhuwan Hookah sends these preconceptions up in smoke.
Decidedly un-womblike, Dhuwan is a stark, modern space with striking red walls speckled with a rotating array of photographs. The minimalist black furniture sits far from the ground, and the only evidence ethnic touch is a string of paper-lantern lights framing the front windows. A lone shoji screen defines a vague stage area, where acoustic musical acts occasionally perform. If you prefer a more opium den-like experience, head to the back area, where sheer curtains create a semi-private lounge.
Dhuwan offers 65 high-quality varieties of flavored tobacco. With so many choices, you might consider asking the friendly staff to select one for you; you can also request that they add fruit to the base.
With a location only a stone's throw away from Loyola College, it's easy to imagine a place full of freshman philosophy students waxing existential about the ills and thrills of nothingness, but in reality Dhuwan has a far mellower vibe.
Smoking-law note: The four Dhuwan locations now also allow cigarette and cigar smoking. Pre-packaged food and beverages will be sold, and delivery from neighboring restaurants will be allowed as well.
