Date: September 27, 2008
Cost: Free
Organizer: Hyde Park Cultural Alliance, The University of Chicago, and the Hyde Park Jazz Society
What to expect: This jazz marathon offers 14 hours of non-stop music (including Willie Pickens, Fred Anderson, Corey Wilkes and Robert Irving III) at venues throughout Hyde Park, including the DuSable Museum, Little Black Pearl and the Checkerboard Lounge. Trolleys will be available to shuttle you from show to show.
Why to go: It's a chance to see some great music in some unexpected venues. For example, Frank Lloyd Wright's famed Robie House will host the Brazilian sounds of Paulinho Garcia, Greg Fishman and Heitor Garcia (4-6 p.m.) at the same time that saxophonist Ari Brown takes over the hallowed halls of the University of Chicago's Quadrangle Club (4-5 p.m.). See the full schedule here.
Additional info: Even if you're not into jazz, it's still worth your while to head to Hyde Park. 57th Street Midnight Madness, which runs from 10 p.m.-midnight, will include exclusive food offerings from local restaurants like Salonica, Medici and Istria Cafe, and half-off sales at both Powell's Bookstore and University Hair Stylist and Spa. Many businesses along 57th Street will have extended hours. And there will be music, too; the "Midnight Slam Jam" begins at midnight at the International House.
