If MTV made a show about working out, it would be set in a gym that looked exactly like this one. To say that it's hip is an understatement, with its in-lobby fireplace suspended from the ceiling and DJ spinning in the corner. But unlike MTV, there's no teasing fluff here. This is a gym for people who want results (its slogan, after all, is "Look Better Naked"), and it's very serious about how it goes about that.
With free weights that increase to 150 pounds in increments of 2.5 pounds and a staff of full-time trainers handpicked by David Barton himself (the trainer-to-the-stars got P. Diddy in shape for the NYC Marathon), the emphasis is on getting lean or built by relying on weights. Still, the cardio addict in you will find a whole bay of state-of-the-art machines with individual TVs.
Classes: A good chunk of the members work with the trainers on a regular basis, but the classes (no silly choreographed aerobics here) are trainer-taught and weight-intensive. Feel the burn with Pain & Pleasure, get your biceps in shape with the 30-minute Guns or target your glutes, calves, hamstrings and more in Back Attack. There's also spin and yoga taught by teachers from well-known studios like Moksha.
Extras: Oh, the locker rooms! I think I'd be willing to work up a sweat just to hang out in the spa-like space, which features Zen-like locker coves, an aromatherapy steam room with conical lights inlaid in the floor, endless towels and showers stocked with Bumble & Bumble products. Also, events (like an open bar evening at Y Bar) are occasionally held for members to further promote the idea of your gym as a part of your lifestyle, rather than a nagging chore.
