Editorial Review of Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore

Get your Sherlock Holmes on.
Forest Park is home to more dead people than living (half of its land is cemetery space), which might explain why it's also home to one of the best history and mystery bookstores in the Chicago area. Opened in Oak Park in 1990, Centuries & Sleuths moved to Forest Park in 2000, where it's now a one-room bookshop decked out mainly in forest greens, deep reds and plenty of rocking chairs.

Don't look for a simple division of history and mystery on the shelves here, though. Owner Augie Aleksy sees more connection than disparity between the two subjects and most mystery books here are informed by or attempt to tackle events of the past. A wide selection of titles is imported from the UK, to the delight of those eagerly awaiting the latest book in a well-loved series. Also on hand is a well-edited selection of biography, a generous children's section for any budding Sherlock Holmes that wanders in, and straightforward history books.

If you're looking for like-minded readers as well as new books, stop by on the last Sunday of the month for the history discussion group or the third Saturday of the month for the mystery discussion group (readers vote on new titles at the beginning of each year). On occasion Centuries & Sleuths plays host to events like mystery plays, historical trials and "Meeting of the Minds," where actors bring historical figures back to life for the evening. Check the bookstore's website for upcoming store events.
