| 1904 - ? Chicago native James T. Farrell attended the University of Chicago, but strayed far from the ivory tower when seeking material for his writing. Farrell's Depression-era works portray the harsh lives of Chicago's working classes in an unsentimental, even bitter style. He wrote trilogies centered on the adventures of characters Studs Lonigan and Danny O'Neill, along with several other novels and collections of short stories. Selected Works:
