| Janet Ayer Fairbank, like her sister Margaret Ayer Barnes, was a prolific novelist and short-story writer born in Chicago. Her works reflect her interest in history, politics, and the women's suffrage movement. "The Smiths" has been called "a social history of Chicago in the form of a novel;" "The Bright Land" is about pioneer life in Galena, Illinois; "Rich Man, Poor Man" is a novel about women in politics.
