| 1830 - 1894 Joseph Kirkland followed in his mother's footsteps when he became a writer. Caroline Kirkland wrote "A New Home - Who'll Follow?" a book about pioneer life published in 1839. When Joseph Kirkland found his new home, leaving New York State for Chicago in 1856, he found many followers, among them Hamlin Garland. Garland and other up-and-coming writers emulated Kirkland's realism. Kirkland did not begin publishing books until late in his life; "The Captain of Company K" was a partly autobiographical book based on his fighting experiences in the Civil War. Works:
