When I entered this enigmatic, definition-resistant Lincoln Park bar/club/lounge (depending on what night you roll in), a lively crowd was on hand to support the brave open-mic musicians. The bartender gave me a nod and introduced himself (rare) and some of the other barflies (even more rare).
"The music is great, especially on Mondays for open mic. And the bartenders are hot," said Tonic Room bartender Chris Jordan.
"The staff is always friendly, the atmosphere is always good," added John Wilson, the Jake Gyllenhaal-looking regular. ("Actually, he looks like me," Wilson insisted.)
The crowd seems to change according to the varying music selections offered at night. Monday night was open mic with a preamble of solid funk/rock followed by a set of refreshingly original ballads and ditties. Topics and styles ranged from blues to politics, acoustic love jams to psychedelic instrumentals.
The soulful, unique blend of music is the place's signature appeal, with the art deco design (check out the park bench in the bathroom) and the drink specials tying for second place.
