| Local quintet Algernon draws inspiration from the jazz-tinged post-rock machinations of Tortoise, Chicago's foremost group in the genre. The group's style, however, veers into the louder and noisier elements of rock music. Led by composer/guitarist Dave Miller, Algernon uses two guitars, bass, drums and a vibraphone to combine gorgeous melodies with psychedelic effects and rock beats.
Following a self-released debut in 2004, Algernon released Familiar Espionage in 2007 on Ears & Eyes Records, a label that puts out a number of great releases by local jazz and jazz-fusion artists. Familiar Espionage successfully captured Algernon's live energy and cemented its modern sound, which has drawn praise from gifted Chicago jazz guitarists Fareed Haque and Jeff Parker.
