Arks

Arks, formed in 2002 by Paul Hornschemeier (guitar, vocals) and Mat Biscan (bass), with original drummer Bo Altes, based their early work on Paul's four-track recordings. After the addition of Lanny Oswalt (guitar) and Glenn Rischke (drums), the group's sound quickly evolved from ethereal pop - nodding considerably to Yo La Tengo and Sigur Ros - into a four-piece wall of rhythm more in the vein of Sonic Youth, Aframes, Brainiac, and Wire.

In the fall of 2004, Arks entered the studio for the first time, recording their EP "Or Else It's Not There." Containing raw sounds and new ideas, the EP provides an example of the band's early aesthetic. Two years later, Arks can be found on Highwheel Records' first project, a 10" compilation entitled "Welcome to the Future." "Subtraction," Ark's contribution to this release, a sparsely dark song laced in distortion, feedback, and thumping backbeats, reveals a glimpse of the group's current direction.

The creation of "Subtraction," and "Center of All Things," (featured on the EP) were watershed moments in the evolution of the band's sound. Lacking any formal musical training, they thrive on the classic punk ethic, with an art school approach to the creative process.
