| Young (34) Chicago Symphony Orchestra composer-in-residence has nonetheless won a number of major prizes and fellowships, including a Guggenheim. Says Chicago Reader critic Ted Shen, "The Thomas pieces I've heard share a meticulous craftsmanship; it's hard to find an awkward transition or a dangling note, and she has a knack for blending timbres. Her predilection is for small, impressionistic gestures and shimmering textures, which coalesce into grand sonic displays." She is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Bernard Rands.
