Brother Brother has risen phoenix-like from the ashes of the Otters, a popular Chicago band with a very loyal following, a significant number of whom have crossed over. It's easy to see why, BB combines outstanding vocals (two male lead vocalists and two female backing vocalists) with a delightfully happy funky sound. The band is centered around (surprise) two brothers, John (the former member of the Otters) and Matt Spiegel. John plays a killer slide guitar and Matt is the lead singer. They have a huge outfit. (I saw them once on Schuba's small stage and they looked like a police line-up). There are three horn players (trumpet, sax, and trombone) keys, bass, 2 guitars, drums, and three other singers. Each player adds to the large, almost-symphonic (but way funky) sound. John plays the slide almost with a god-like aplomb; Matt sings with enviable intensity and melody. The rest of the band has the immense talent necessary to back them very well.
If I could sum it up it a few words, Brother Brother is above all fun, but terribly talented and entertaining.
They have a new album out: busy little id in addition to their debut Bring on the Dogs.
