The new Chicago big band CMJO, directed by Jim Peterson, is a twenty piece group which consists of professional free-lance musicians who have have toured with the bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Tommy Dorsey and others. The CMJO specializes in the performance of the original arrangements of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, though they have expanded their repertoire greatly recently putting their unique stamp on the likes of Woody Herman, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson and many others. In February '98 they released a fantastic new CD, Live and Screamin' (Chicago Lakeside Jazz) recorded live at FitzGerald's in Berwyn. The disc quite neatly captures the powerful energy and delicious melodies of the band in the live setting. With over 20 players (each very accomplished in his or her own right), the group has the great, full sound of jazz orchestras of the past. The expressive solos blend seamlessly into lush and beautiful ensemble work. This is traditional Chicago jazz as it was meant to be. Though the music hearkens back to the great orchestras of the '40s and '50s, don't think it's dated; this is timeless music with universal appeal and few (if any) play it better than the CMJO. With the resurgence of big band jazz, one would hope that more attention would be paid to this fantastic group of highly talented players. As Les Line of Jazz 52nd Street says: "Damn, these Chicago cats do good." Exactly... Members include Tom Baker (trumpet), Frank Catalano (tenor sax), Bob Chmel (drums), Tim Coffman (trombone), Mark Colby (tenor sax), Terry Connell, Art Davis, Kirk Garrison (all trumpet), Jon Irabagon (alto sax), Phil Gratteu (drums), Todd Herbert (tenor sax), Al Keeler (percussion), Ken Kistner (baritone sax), Hary Kozlowski (trombone), Joni King (vocalist), Kent Lawson (alto & bari sax), Allister.html>John McAllister (bass trombone, tuba), John Martin (trombone), Ron Mills (piano), John Mose (trombone), Dennis Noday (trumpet), Jim Peterson (trumpet), David Rothstein (bass), Chris Sarlas (alto sax), Scott Stevenson (piano), Don Stille (piano) and Mark Tuttle (tenor sax).
