Chicago a cappella a nine-voice professional vocal ensemble founded in 1993, performs all styles of music--from chant and Renaissance to contemporary, spirituals, bluegrass, jazz and pop. They have regular concert series in Chicago, Oak Park and Evanston. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote in 2006: “Many ensembles talk about breaking out of the formal, traditional concert format to forge a stronger, more relaxed connection with audiences. At Saturday night's concert,...the nine attractive singers of Chicago a cappella demonstrated how it's done. These were classical musicians whose smiles and easy manner made the audience feel like welcome guests rather than potentially distracting intruders. Most importantly, of course, Chicago a cappella is a splendid vocal ensemble.”
They have released six CDs, including two new releases in 2005. Their recording of Shakespeare-inspired music, "Shall I Compare Thee?" (Cedille Records) was praised by the Washington Post as a "charming, beautifully sung collection....Chicago a cappella sings with clarity, well-balanced tone, and deep emotional involvement.” American Record Guide wrote of the same recording, “Chicago a cappella is full of musical personality. The voices blend beautifully, but there's individuality to all of them...a unique, unstuffy, beautifully sung enterprise.” The ensemble's CD "Eclectric" (Centaur Records) was praised by John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune as "an overflowing cornucopia of choral delights...a testament to Chicago's rich musical life."
