Clifford (born Irving Stanley, September 2, 1931) Jordan, a classmate of Johnny Griffin & Richard Davis, was an excellent tenor saxophonist, if similar to Griffin and Von Freeman. After playing with several R&B bands in Chicago, he played with Sonny Stitt. He briefly replaced Sonny Rollins in Max Roach's band in 1957, worked with Horace Silver (1957-8), was a regular member of the J.J. Johnson sextet (1959-60), the Kenny Dorham quintet (1961-2), and the Max Roach Quartet (1962-4, 1965).
Including a European tour (he returned several times in following years), Jordan spent four months of 1964 with Charles Mingus. Jordan is also well thought-of for his work with the New York public schools.
Among his recordings are These Are My Roots (1965; Atlantic) and The Highest Mountain (1975; Muse).
