| This excellent Chicago jazz pianist had auspicious beginnings, succeeding Herbie Hancock at the keyboard in the Hyde Park High School Jazz Band. McClerkin's studies continued at Northern Illinois University, and he has been performing professionally since the '60s. In 1983, McClerkin released Searchin' For the Soul. His follow-up, The Power of One (Southport Records) came ten years later, and his third album, Island of Dreams (Southport Records) was released in 2001. McClerkin is also an accomplished scholar (with an MA in Urban Studies from Loyola) and author, having penned columns for the Chicago Courier and a collection of short stories called Undercurrents that focused on the Black Experience.
