David Sanborn

Born in 1945 in Tampa, Florida and raised in St. Louis, David Sanborn took up the saxophone as therapy for polio from which he suffered as a youngster. He studied music at Northwestern University (one of the few universities to have a saxophone department at that time) under Fred Hemke, and became interested in Chicago's jazz/blues tradition. While there, Sanborn played with Little Milton and Albert King, and later with the Paul butterfield's Blues Band.

He has led a variety of his own groups, as well as an eclectic number of other groups including John Scofield's "Electric Outlet," Steely Dan, Rickie Lee Jones, and others. His syndicated television series, "Night Music," brought rarely seen players to the public eye, and he also hosted a radio program, "The Jazz Show." He won his first Grammy in 1982 for his Voyeur, and another for his 1986 Double Vision.
