Delmark Records

Growing up in Wichita, Kansas, Delmark founder Bob Koester got hooked on jazz after hearing artists like Lionel Hampton. He soon turned his hobby into a business. He sold records in college, started a record sales company in St. Louis and recorded the Windy City Six as his first side for Delmark in 1953. In 1958, he moved the label to a storefront in Chicago and started Jazz Record Mart. Koester continually introduces the recordings of cutting-edge Chicago artists, from Roscoe Mitchell in the ‘60s to Jeff Parker and Josh Abrams today. (Patrick Sisson)

One of the country's most important blues/jazz labels (and also the country's longest-running independent label at 46 years) is run by Bob Koester, who also owns the Jazz Record Mart. In business since the mid-'50s, the blues roster has included Jimmy Dawkins, Artur "Big Boy" Crudup, Buddy Guy, Carey Bell, Otis Rush, Jimmy Forrest, J.B. Hutto, Dave Specter, Syl Johnson, Junior Wells, Magic Sam, and Byther Smith. Jazz artists include Roscoe Mitchell, Edward Peterson, Joseph Jarman, Brad Goode, Jodie Christian, the AACM, and the late Sun Ra, whose recordings are selling better than ever.... Recent albums from guitarist Lurrie Bell and tenor saxman Archie Shepp.
