| A composer, arranger, musician (saxophone, clarinet, piano) and educator, Wilkerson is one of Chicago's finest living saxophonists. Leader of cutting-edge octet 8 Bold Souls (a swinging, inventive ensemble which has been around since the early '80s) and the 25-member performance ensemble Shadow Vignettes, he's been a member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble since 1977 in addition to running the Sessoms Records label. He's also been the president of the AACM, and teaches at the Association's School of Music. While his writing and arranging often overshadows his brilliant performance skills, he's played with a large number of folks, including the AACM Big Band, Muhal Richard Abrams, Douglas Ewart, Chicago Freeman, George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Shirley King, The Temptations and many others, but now rarely outside of his octet.
