| Jen was born and raised in Chicago. Upon obtaining a BA in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1993, Jen quickly realized that she wanted more than an education: She wanted to perform. She fronted several bands, singing lead and harmonies, playing piano and guitar in several different venues around southeastern Michigan for close to five years. She also enjoyed a successful solo residency for more than a year. As Jen began writing more of her own original work, her quest to share music has brought her home, to Chicago. Jen currently plays two to three times per week in the city and is continually booking more solo performances. Her powerful voice is attracting more attention in her hometown than ever before. She has played at several different bars around the city and brought the house down as an opening act at the Hard Rock Café. Jen has also been a part of several showcases including the Chicago Singer Spotlight, the Local Vocal Brew and Chick Singer Night-Chicago. Jen also had the honor of sharing a stage with Odetta, Michelle Shocked, Harolyn Blackwell, The Chantels and more at the Girl Scouts 90th Anniversary Sing-Along on the mall in Washington DC in June 2002. Jen and her new friends performed for and with over 120,000 people in the nation’s capital.
Jen also sings a song that’s rather challenging and quite moving: The National Anthem. She sings it a cappella and commanded the attention of over forty thousand when she performed for the Detroit Pistons while in Michigan. Now, she is bringing this stunning performance home. She has performed at Soldier Field and plans to perform for more events there as well as at events held at Wrigley Field and the United Center.
Her style is expansive, though best described as fitting into rock/folk rock/adult contemporary genres. She has a strong voice and plays smooth, lyrical piano. Jen plays everything from Stevie Nicks and Aretha Franklin to Alanis Morrisette and Fiona Apple, as well as her own original creations. Friends say she's "Ahead of her time" and "Stronger vocally than anyone else I've heard". Critics say her voice is "soulfully raucous" and "Tide clean and Evian clear."
The full-length It's About Time, a follow-up to Faces (also known as the Red Wine Album), was released in 2002. Samples from her albums are available on her Web site. For more information, visit their website: http://www.jenporter.com
