Liu-Kuo Chang
 
Northwestern University faculty member who is assistant principal viola of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1988-). He has previously held similar positions in the Denver Symphony Orchestra and orchestras in China, Europe, and the United States. One of the first Chinese musicians to come to the United States when China opened its doors in 1979, Chang received a scholarship from the Eastman School of Music.

He learned piano from his mother (a graduate of the London Royal Academy of Music), a Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory that Chang attended beginning at age 7. After graduation, he finally switched to viola.

He has made solo appearances with the Chicago, Phoenix, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras, performed with the Chicago String Ensemble and Chicago Symphony Chamber Players, and taught at Japan's Affinis Music Festival since 1992. Chang became a United States citizen in 1990.
