Marian McPartland

British born pianist came to the US 50 years ago (in 1946), after marrying cornetist (and Chicagoan) Jimmy McPartland. When Ella Fitzgerald retired, McPartland inherited the crown of "first lady of jazz." She's added to the musical mantle by becoming an oral historial as well. Her popular NPR radio series Piano Jazz -- which features interview, solo and duet performances with the guest -- has run for over 15 years, and won a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting. Jazz Alliance has released CDs of the shows with Dave Brubeck, Teddy Wilson, Rosemary Clooney, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Eubie Blake, Dick Wellstood, Barbara Carroll and Clark Terry... She's been honored by Yale University, Bates College, Union College, and Union College, and has received Downbeat Magazine's "Lifetime Achievement Award."

She hosts a live version of the program at the 1999 Chicago Jazz Festival, with guests Willie Pickens, Judy Roberts, and Jodie Christian. For the finale, they will reportedly perform some 8-handed versions of Ellington tunes.
