In the mid-1990s Tori Amos dominated the airwaves and most other would-be-femme-rockstars were told that the token female slot had been filled. Over the next few years, women musicians have increasingly strengthened their grip on the scene. The ones who make it? The Rolling Stone-worthy seem to be those who have an edge, chics who have traded submissive, tentative love ballads for tunes dripping confidence and a certain bad-ass quality. Rockit Girl has found that necessary edge (insert clapping here) that seems to make the musical world go round. Rockit Girl was formed in the summer of 1999 by Gina Crosley (former Emil Muzz frontwoman) who wanted to create ChicagoÆs finest femme power pop trio. Veruca Salt's Louise Post offered to produce the project, thus beginning the search for a drummer and bassist (Crosley covers vocals and guitar).
Crosley thought she had found what she needed in drummer Jen Matteson ad bassist/singer Kathryn Heidemann. The trio spent the next few months rehearsing and fleshing out Crosley's tunes. Near the end of production for their debut offering, The Lift-Off E.P., Matteson decided to leave the group to pursue other domestic offerings.
It was a "one door closes and another one opens" situation, as Veruca Salt drummer Jimmy Madla offered to step up and help complete the E.P. (with Jason Batchko of Sourball and The Joy Poppers filling in live). With the vision of all-female rock shattered, Crosley gave the ok to former Emil Muzz guitarist Chris Frantisak to contribute his services to the E.P. The two boys became Rockit Girls, ready to perform live with a solid album behind them.
The group has received airtime on ChicagoÆs Q101 and Loyola University Radio, as well as mentions on MTV News and in the Illinois Entertainer. And rightly so. The sound is fresh, bouncing between undeniably harder beats and introspective, softer tunes. Their songs about love aren't girly mush, but have that certain edge that makes it all worthwhile.
