The 1970s: you automatically think of a time when Disco was king, girls had scary big hair, guys wore leisure suits and everyone wore platform shoes – or clogs. A decade largely dismissed for its garish clothing and simplistic dance music.
But if you peer beyond the veneer, you’ll see what else was going on. Some of the most memorable and inspirational rock music was being made at that time. The lines between rock and jazz were blurring as accomplished musicians expanded their minds and the frontiers of their music. Think of bands like Santana, Steely Dan, Jeff Beck, King Crimson, Genesis, Traffic, Yes, the list goes on.
This “underground” music still exerts its power on listeners today as a new generation experiences its infectious polyrhythmic groovitude and friends of that era recapture the flame that was their youth.
