This cozy little spot takes its menu from comfort Thai and Japanese fare. While the tempura and teriyaki options satisfy, the Thai side of the menu sets Chai apart from other casual Asian eateries. The curry dishes—ranging from earthy Panang to a spicy catfish concoction—are served with aromatic Jasmine or brown rice. Noodle dishes come in enormous portions packed with flavorful veggies and a delicate balance of Eastern flavors.
Steer clear of any menu item that includes soy sauce; the cooks here tend to be entirely too heavy handed with the salty stuff. The soup menu is packed with all the brews you need to nurse you through a Chicago winter; traditional takes on miso, wonton and tom yum don't disappoint, but the true star is the Thai chicken noodle—guaranteed to smack the flu right out of you. Most entrees settle into the $8-$12 range, depending upon which protein you choose. Lunch specials start at $5.95. You get to choose from a wide variety of Thai and Japanese dishes and add egg roll, spring roll, crab rangoon or California roll. This one of those rare lunch menus that actually includes the menu items you'd like to order (including three sushi sets).
Finish off your meal with a selection from the tantalizing dessert menu; mango sticky rice, thai custard or banana wontons are custom-built for happy endings. To take full advantage of the BYOB policy, grab a bottle from the nearby Whole Foods.
