With so many restaurants boasting menus that read like novels, Veg Out's sole option provides a needed break from decision-making at dinnertime. Your only choice: lettuce with a multitude of ingredients. The build-your-own salad spot sits just steps from the corner of Belmont and Broadway, and its small storefront blends into the flurry of activity at the intersection. Keep your eyes peeled for the spare, plate glass exterior, which reveals two tables, counter seats and a salad-assembly station.
The minimalist vibe continues once you enter. Aluminum-top tables and white lights create a sense of sterility, while sea green walls add a touch of friendliness. This decor lends itself well to Veg Out's simple dining concept.
To start, select a bowl containing your lettuce of choice (romaine, field greens, baby spinach or mesclun) and hand it off to a server behind the counter. They'll happily pile on all the fresh veggies, meats, cheeses and other toppings you can handle, and toss it with one of several homemade dressing options, like chipotle ranch, balsamic vinegar or honey dijon. Add-ins run the gamut from standard croutons to tofu, anchovies, raisins, capers and sunflower seeds.
Each salad’s $8.50 price tag may seem a little suspect, but that rate includes heaping portions of unlimited add-ins. Throw in a fresh baked roll and a drink, and you can take home a hearty meal that won’t clog your arteries.
