| Northwestern University football star theatre major left school a year early, postponing a theatre career to play with the Chicago Bears. After a full year with the ill-starred Chicago professional football team, Autry was cut, and at the end of training camp signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Autry eventually quit the team because his heart was apparently in film. While in college, he successfully challenged the NCAA rule forbidding students to have summer jobs (he wanted to act in a movie), leading to an association rule change.
